AI Kusta Care: Polije Innovation Accelerates Early Detection of Leprosy
Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) has developed an artificial intelligence–based application called AI Kusta Care to help accelerate the early detection of leprosy and improve public access to health services. The innovation was created in response to the continued presence of leprosy cases in several health centers across Jember Regency, despite global efforts to eliminate the disease.
The application was initiated by a team of Polije lecturers led by Tegar Wahyu Yudha Pratama. According to the development team, AI Kusta Care is designed to bridge the gap between communities and healthcare providers by enabling individuals to perform preliminary screenings independently through their smartphones.
One of the application’s main features is an AI-powered screening system that analyzes images of skin abnormalities. Users can upload photographs of skin patches, discoloration, or other symptoms commonly associated with leprosy. The system then compares the images with an existing database and provides an initial assessment based on artificial intelligence algorithms.
In addition to screening services, AI Kusta Care also offers educational content and information about nearby healthcare facilities. These features are intended to increase public awareness of leprosy symptoms, encourage timely medical consultation, and reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment.
When the application identifies a potential indication of leprosy, users are advised to seek further examination at a healthcare facility. Conversely, if no indication is detected, the system provides guidance on appropriate follow-up actions. This approach helps users make informed decisions while supporting early intervention efforts.
The application has already been made available through the Google Play Store and is distributed as an open-source platform. During its trial phase, dozens of users participated in testing the system, providing valuable feedback that helped improve the accuracy and usability of the technology.
Polije is also working toward integrating the application with local healthcare services. Future development plans include enabling health centers to monitor screening results directly, allowing healthcare professionals to conduct further analysis and follow-up actions more efficiently.
Through AI Kusta Care, Polije demonstrates how artificial intelligence can be applied to address real public health challenges. By combining digital innovation with community engagement, the institution hopes to contribute significantly to the early detection, prevention, and eventual elimination of leprosy while empowering communities to take a more active role in managing their health.
