Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) welcomed representatives from PT Pesona Khatulistiwa Nusantara (PT PKN) for a strategic collaboration meeting aimed at strengthening the synergy between vocational education and industry. The partnership focuses on developing sustainable economic activities in post-mining areas in North Kalimantan while promoting the principles of the green economy.

The meeting highlighted PT PKN’s commitment to transforming reclaimed mining land into productive economic zones. The company is currently developing approximately 600–700 hectares of reclamation land for various activities, including Bali cattle farming, cocoa plantations, and downstream chocolate production. These initiatives are expected to contribute to national food security and sustainable regional development.

According to Yonie Utomo, General Manager Support of PT PKN, the company views education as a key component of long-term community empowerment. To support local human resource development, PT PKN has sponsored students from villages surrounding its mining operations to pursue higher education at Polije. Currently, 23 students are studying at the institution and are expected to become future leaders in regional development programs.

The collaboration also emphasizes the importance of technology and data-driven solutions in addressing real-world challenges. Advisor Gatot Hari Priowirjanto encouraged lecturers and students to conduct applied research that can directly support sustainable development initiatives in post-mining communities. He stressed that innovation and scientific research are essential for strengthening village economies, particularly through organic agriculture and environmentally responsible practices.

Polije Director, Saiful Anwar, welcomed the partnership as an important step in expanding the role of vocational education in supporting national development goals. He noted that Polije continues to strengthen its Teaching Factory (Tefa) approach, which provides students with direct exposure to industrial environments and practical learning experiences.

Through its Teaching Factory model, Polije integrates industry-based learning into its curriculum, with practical activities accounting for a significant portion of student learning. This approach ensures that graduates possess the technical skills and professional competencies required by modern industries while remaining responsive to sustainability challenges.

One of the major outcomes envisioned from the partnership is the establishment of a field campus in the post-mining area. The facility will serve as a living laboratory where students, lecturers, and industry practitioners can collaborate on applied research, innovation projects, and community development programs. Such initiatives are expected to create tangible benefits for local communities while advancing sustainable land management practices.

By combining academic expertise with industrial experience, Polije and PT Pesona Khatulistiwa Nusantara aim to create a long-term model for green economic development. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, community empowerment, and the preparation of future professionals capable of addressing complex challenges in Indonesia’s transition toward a greener economy.
