Polije Encourages Sumberwaru Residents to Care for the Environment
JEMBER — Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) is encouraging residents of Sumberwaru Village, Sukowono District, Jember, to practice proper environmental management. The activity involved elementary and high school students, teachers, female Islamic teachers, and village officials.
Participants came from SDN 1 Sumberwaru, SDN 2 Sumberwaru, SMAN Plus Sukowono, and Darul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School. Through the activity, Polije encouraged the community to understand the importance of a clean environment and apply it in daily life.
Nilam Puspitasari, S.T., M.KKK., a lecturer from the Polije Department of Health, opened the activity with a session on Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS). The material covered handwashing, regular bathing, dental and nail hygiene, and waste separation.
“Maintaining cleanliness needs to become a daily habit. Therefore, we encourage the community to practice clean and healthy living behaviors while maintaining environmental cleanliness,” said Nilam.
Next, Elly Yuliastutik from Griya Resik Waste Bank guided participants through a compost-making practice. The community service team provided composting drums and EM4 bioactivators for each participating institution.
“Processing organic waste can be a simple step to reduce waste while producing useful compost,” Nilam explained. In addition to composting, participants also observed recycled products such as bags, drink containers, and household items.
At the end of the activity, the team handed over environmental education equipment to Sumberwaru Village Head Wahyu Adi Sutrisnoputro. The equipment included three-type waste bins, composting kits, personal hygiene kits, and environmental cleanliness kits.
The community service team consisted of Uystka Hikmatul Kamiliyah NH, S.S., M.Sc.; Milawaty, S.Hum., M.Hum.; Muhammad Dzulkifli, S.Pd., M.Sc.; and Lely Dian Utami, S.Pd., M.Pd. Five students also supported the activity: Christy Rafliani Pasulu, Syifa Nailah Rahman, Frado Rizky Shafarel, M. Raditya Nugraha, and Achmad Iqbal Al Rosyid.
