Polije Hosts International Guest Lecture to Promote Modern Agricultural Transformation
The Agricultural Production Department of Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) successfully organized an International Guest Lecture aimed at strengthening students’ understanding of modern agricultural transformation and sustainable food security. Held at the Vocational Auditorium Building, the event carried the theme “Biotechnology Innovation and Agricultural Transformation Towards Sustainable Food Security,” reflecting the institution’s commitment to preparing future agricultural professionals for global challenges.
The guest lecture featured Dr. Inez Hortense Slamet-Loedin, a renowned scientist from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), who shared insights on the role of genome engineering and biotechnology in improving agricultural productivity and food security. Her presentation provided students with valuable exposure to cutting-edge scientific developments that are shaping the future of agriculture worldwide.
In addition to the international expert session, participants also had the opportunity to engage with representatives from PT UPL Indonesia, who discussed modern crop protection strategies and innovations in pest management. The collaboration between academia and industry allowed students to gain a comprehensive understanding of how scientific research can be translated into practical agricultural solutions.
According to Hanif Fatur Rohman, Secretary of the Agricultural Production Department, the event was designed to provide students with direct access to knowledge from international experts and industry practitioners. Through such interactions, students can better understand emerging technologies and their applications in addressing agricultural challenges, including climate change, food shortages, and declining productivity.
The lecture emphasized the growing importance of biotechnology in achieving sustainable agricultural systems. Topics such as genetic engineering, crop improvement, and precision agriculture were highlighted as key tools for increasing food production while minimizing environmental impacts. These innovations are increasingly recognized as essential components of modern agricultural transformation.
Vice Director for Cooperation and Public Relations, Agung Wahyono, praised the department’s consistency in organizing international academic activities. He noted that events like this contribute significantly to creating a positive academic culture by introducing students to global perspectives and encouraging them to think beyond conventional agricultural practices.
The Agricultural Production Department, which aspires to become a leading vocational education center in agriculture in Asia, continues to prioritize industry engagement, innovation, and international collaboration as part of its educational strategy. Such initiatives support the department’s mission to produce highly skilled graduates capable of responding to the demands of Agriculture 4.0 and sustainable food systems.
Through this International Guest Lecture, Polije reaffirmed its commitment to developing globally competitive graduates equipped with advanced knowledge and practical skills. By connecting students with world-class researchers and industry experts, the institution continues to strengthen its role in driving agricultural innovation and supporting Indonesia’s transition toward a more modern, productive, and sustainable agricultural sector.
