Polije Showcases Student Innovation Products Through Project-Based Learning
Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) successfully organized the Project-Based Learning (PBL) Product Exhibition hosted by the Department of Agricultural Technology, providing a platform for students to showcase innovative products developed through hands-on learning. The annual event highlighted the institution’s commitment to vocational education by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications that address real-world challenges in the food and agricultural sectors.
Carrying the theme “Synergy of Agricultural Technology and Food Engineering in Creating Innovative and Sustainable Production Systems and Food Products to Support Food Security,” the exhibition featured collaborative projects from three study programs: Food Engineering Technology, Agricultural Engineering Technology, and Food Industry Technology. The event demonstrated how interdisciplinary collaboration can generate creative solutions for sustainable food production.
The exhibition displayed a wide range of student-developed products resulting from one semester of project-based learning activities. These innovations reflected students’ abilities to apply scientific principles, technological knowledge, and engineering skills to create products with practical and commercial value. The projects also emphasized sustainability and food security, two key priorities in modern agricultural development.
Polije Director Saiful Anwar explained that the PBL approach enables students to understand the entire industrial and business value chain. Rather than focusing solely on technical production skills, students are trained to manage all aspects of product development, including research, production planning, quality control, branding, and marketing strategies.
One of the distinguishing features of the exhibition was the public product evaluation process. By presenting their products directly to visitors, students received immediate feedback from academics, industry representatives, and consumers. This experience helped them refine their innovations while improving communication, presentation, and entrepreneurial skills.
The Project-Based Learning model adopted by Polije is designed to prepare students for the demands of the workforce and entrepreneurial ventures. Through real project implementation, participants gain valuable experience in teamwork, problem-solving, research and development, and project management. These competencies are increasingly important in today’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape.
Students participating in the program expressed appreciation for the practical learning approach. They noted that the PBL system helped them strengthen collaboration skills, improve time management, and gain deeper insights into product development processes. The experience also allowed them to connect classroom learning with practical applications in industry and business settings.
Through the PBL Product Exhibition, Polije continues to demonstrate its commitment to producing innovative, entrepreneurial, and industry-ready graduates. By encouraging students to transform ideas into tangible products and viable business opportunities, the institution plays an active role in fostering young entrepreneurs while supporting sustainable agricultural and food sector development in Indonesia.
