Polije Strengthens Applied Education through CDIO-PBL and Sustainable Campus Initiatives
JEMBER – Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) continues to develop innovative learning approaches while strengthening its commitment to environmental sustainability. Polije integrates the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) approach into Problem-Based Learning (PBL) through collaboration with Swisscontact and SECO.
The CDIO-PBL approach encourages students to learn through projects and real-world challenges. Students go through a series of stages, from developing concepts and designing solutions to building prototypes and testing the results.
Throughout the process, lecturers and project managers guide students at every stage. Students also learn to prepare budgets, manage risks, allocate resources, evaluate prototypes, and present their work.
Alongside learning innovation, Polije continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability. Polije ranked second among the most sustainable applied higher education institutions in Indonesia in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026.
The achievement further strengthens Polije’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Polije is also improving campus waste management by strengthening waste collection, sorting, and recycling systems.
Polije integrates sustainability guidelines into its learning activities. This approach encourages students to understand environmental management while applying sustainable practices in their campus activities.
In addition, Teaching Factory (TEFA) facilities play an important role in Polije’s applied learning model. Facilities such as the Smart Greenhouse, Renewable Energy Center, Autohub, Bakery & Coffee Lab, UHT TEFA, Rembangan facilities, and Climatology Station provide students with hands-on learning experiences.
Polije is also expanding applied education through its campus network in Bondowoso, Nganjuk, Sidoarjo, Ngawi, and Sabu Raijua. Each campus develops programs tailored to the region’s economic potential and industry needs.
Through the integration of CDIO-PBL and sustainable campus management, Polije connects learning, industry practice, and environmental awareness. This approach strengthens students’ competencies to meet workplace demands while supporting sustainable development.
