JEMBER – Students from Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije) have introduced a Greenhouse Dryer innovation for coffee farmers in Sumbersalak Village, Ledokombo, Jember. The technology accelerates the drying process while helping maintain the quality of coffee beans.

The PPK Ormawa team from the Student Association of the Department of Agricultural Technology (HMJ-TP) also supports farmers in developing digital marketing strategies. The assistance covers branding, packaging, and managing online stores through various marketplaces.

Sumbersalak Village has significant potential for coffee production. However, farmers still face challenges during the drying process, particularly when weather conditions are unfavorable.

To address this challenge, the students developed a Greenhouse Dryer that combines the greenhouse effect with a blower system. The technology reduces the drying period from five to six days to approximately three days.

Sumbersalak Village official Haris Naufal welcomed the technology introduced by the students. He said the facility addresses farmers’ needs by accelerating the coffee-drying process.

“This solar-powered drying innovation is highly beneficial to our community. Manual drying usually takes five to six days, but with this equipment, the coffee can dry within three days,” said Haris Naufal.

Meanwhile, local farmer group leader Moh. Alfarisin said the technology helps farmers maintain the quality of their harvest. He also expressed hope that the innovation would continue through the processing and marketing stages.

“Faster drying helps us maintain the quality of our harvest. We hope this efficiency can continue through the processing and marketing stages,” said Moh. Alfarisin.

Beyond post-harvest technology, the team also turns coffee husks into Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC). The students assist local youth and farmer groups in processing the waste through fermentation.

The program also introduces digital marketing strategies to expand the market for coffee and other village products. As a result, community members gain skills covering the entire process, from production to marketing.

By integrating technology, the circular economy, and digital marketing, the PPK Ormawa HMJ-TP Polije team is helping increase the added value of Sumbersalak coffee. The program also strengthens community capacity and supports the village’s path toward greater economic independence.
